Curio, a well-established and prominent e-commerce brand, has built its reputation on delivering a unique and comprehensive shopping experience. Initially, Curio operated its online store on the Contentful CMS platform, which, despite its extensive capabilities, began to show significant limitations as the brand expanded. Challenges with content management, performance, and maintenance costs became increasingly evident. Recognizing the need for a more efficient, flexible, and cost-effective solution, Curio made the strategic decision to migrate its online operations to Shopify Plus, a platform known for its scalability, user-friendliness, and advanced features.

The Goal

To Enhance Performance, Reduce Costs, and Empower Flexibility

Curio’s primary objective was to overhaul its online store to address the pain points associated with Contentful CMS. Specifically, Curio aimed to

  • Enhance Website Performance: Improve load times to provide a faster, more responsive user experience, thereby increasing conversion rates.
  • Reduce Maintenance Costs: Lower the ongoing costs of maintaining the website by moving to a more manageable and less complex platform
  • Increase Flexibility: Empower the internal team with the ability to make content updates and modifications without relying heavily on developers, thereby reducing inefficiencies and operational bottlenecks.
  • Support B2B Operations: Integrate advanced features to cater to Curio’s B2B clients, including bulk purchasing capabilities and customized catalog management.

The Solution

Leveraging Shopify Plus for a Seamless Migration and Enhanced Capabilities

To meet these objectives, the decision was made to migrate Curio’s online store from Contentful CMS to Shopify Plus. This migration was not just a platform switch; it was a comprehensive rebuild that involved meticulous planning, innovative solutions, and strategic use of Shopify Plus’s advanced features to address the specific needs of Curio.

A Thoughtful Approach

The migration process was approached with careful consideration to ensure a smooth transition and minimal disruption to Curio’s ongoing operations. While Curio’s internal team took charge of the bulk of the data migration, at Kloc, our role was critical in setting up and mapping extract field attributes as metafields within the Product Detail Page (PDP). This step was crucial in ensuring seamless data integration, allowing for dynamic content management on the new platform.

Technical & Design Decisions:

Crafting a Superior Experience

1. Development from Scratch:

  • Tailwind CSS for Styling: The decision to rebuild the entire Curio store from scratch using Tailwind CSS was pivotal. Tailwind’s utility-first approach allowed us to create a clean, responsive, and highly customizable design that perfectly aligned with Curio’s complex design requirements. The result was a modern and cohesive user interface that enhanced the overall shopping experience.

2. Dynamic and Customizable Sections:

  • Empowering the Client: One of the key objectives was to enable Curio’s internal team to manage content with ease, without needing extensive technical expertise. To achieve this, we implemented fully dynamic and customizable sections and pages throughout the site. This gave Curio the flexibility to update content, modify layouts, and manage their store’s look and feel without developer assistance, greatly improving operational efficiency.

3. Enhanced Performance and Flexibility:

  • Metaobjects & Reference Metafields: To address the need for personalized
    shopping experiences, we leveraged Shopify’s metaobjects feature to create robust
    maker profiles. These profiles were then linked with reference metafields, which
    allowed for the display of relevant collections and metadata on the site. This not only
    enhanced the user experience but also provided Curio’s customers with more
    personalized and contextually relevant content.
  • B2B Features for Bulk Purchases: Curio’s B2B operations required advanced
    capabilities to manage company profiles and bulk purchasing processes. Utilizing
    Shopify’s native B2B features, we set up a system where Curio could manage
    company profiles, approve or reject customer registrations, and assign specific
    catalogs to bulk purchase customers. This setup enabled Curio to offer exclusive
    B2B pricing based on customer profiles, improving their ability to serve business
    clients effectively.

4. Advanced API Integrations:

  • Zendesk API Integration: Customer service is a critical component of Curio’s
    business, and the integration of Zendesk via API played a significant role in
    streamlining these processes. The API captured data from various forms across the
    website, facilitating efficient tracking and response times. This integration improved
    communication between Curio’s support team and customers, resulting in quicker
    issue resolution and a more positive customer experience.
  • Algolia Search Implementation: Search functionality is a crucial aspect of any e-commerce site, and we significantly enhanced this feature for Curio using Algolia.
    The search engine was customized to work seamlessly with Curio’s maker profiles,
    providing users with more accurate, relevant, and contextually aware search results.
    This implementation improved the overall user experience by delivering fast, intuitive,
    and precise search capabilities.

5. App Customizations:

  • Request to Quote Customization: In B2B transactions, the ability to request quotes is often essential. We customized the Request to Quote app to ensure that
    notifications were automatically sent to Curio’s merchant team whenever a customer
    made a request. This automation streamlined the quote management process,
    ensuring that inquiries were handled promptly and efficiently.
  • Wishlist and Custom Cart Page: Understanding the importance of a cohesive
    shopping experience, we adapted the wishlist app to meet Curio’s specific
    requirements. Additionally, we designed a fully custom cart page, removing all
    theme-based code to accommodate Curio’s unique logic and design needs. This
    customization ensured that the shopping cart functionality aligned perfectly with the
    rest of the site, providing a seamless and intuitive user experience.

The Outcome

The migration to Shopify Plus marked a significant transformation for Curio’s online store. The benefits of the new platform were immediately evident:
